Media statement on collapse of carpark structure during demolition works at Shenton Way
Singapore, 2 August 2012 - The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) was alerted at 5.15pm of the collapse of a partially demolished building and our engineers went down to the site to investigate. The builder was carrying out demolition on a four-storey carpark along Shenton Way. Part of the carpark structure slab collapsed during demolition works.
The Qualified Person* (QP) for the demolition work has inspected the site and assessed that the adjacent 39-storey UIC building tower, which is also due for demolition, is not affected by the collapse and hence has no structural safety concerns. As a precautionary measure, the QP has instructed the builder to prop a portion of the carpark structure fronting Shenton Way. Two lanes of Shenton Way have been closed as an additional precautionary measure while the propping works are carried out.
BCA has revoked the permit for demolition works and instructed the QP and builder to carry out a detailed investigation of the cause of the incident.
*The Qualified Person is the Professional Engineer who is in charge of the construction works for a project.
