Workforce Development: Built Environment Apprenticeship

What Is It?

The Built Environment Apprenticeship seeks to help firms attract local new entrants as well as upgrade existing local tradesmen by providing a clear progression path and an attractive remuneration package. Structured in two independent stages, it essentially combines employment with classroom-based vocational training,

Stage 1: Tradesman development phase - A partnership between BCA & ITE targeting ‘O’ & ‘N’ level holders, i.e. a young pipeline of new entrants. The programme spans over 2.5 years.

Stage 2: Foreman development phase - A 2-year programme applicable to mature jobseekers and existing tradesmen.

Who is it for?

Industry firms keen to build up their manpower capacity:

Stage 1 - The apprentice will graduate with a NITEC qualification and an Industry-recognised certificate, qualifying him/her for the CoreTrade Tradesman registration.

Stage 2 - Upon successful completion, the apprentice will obtain a Trade Diploma which will qualify him/her for the CoreTrade Foreman registration. [Male applicants must have completed full time National Service unless he is exempted]

How much?

BCA will provide financial incentives to help participating firms defray part of their training costs as well as help them retain their apprentices.

Stage 1 - Firms will pay the apprentice a minimum monthly salary of $1,000 and BCA will top it up with an additional $200 monthly, to make it more attractive to the apprentice. BCA will also co-fund up to 80% of the course fees for the skills training at the BCA Academy.

Stage 2 - Firms will commit to a minimum monthly basic pay of $1,500 to the apprentice and raise it to $1,750 in the second year. BCA will extend an Upgrading Incentive directly to the apprentice of $3,000 on a 6-monthly interval in the first year, and $1,500 in the second year. BCA will also co-fund up to 80% of the Trade Diploma course fees at the BCA Academy.
