Dust Busters

A house that is clean is beneficial to the health and offers an environment that is more welcoming to guests. With the right tools, dusting and keeping the home clean can be made easier.

Feather dusters are a popular choice for dusting as they are easy to use and can get into narrow places. However they drop off some of the dust after it is picked up which then settles elsewhere. You can use static dusters for areas that are dustier as they attract the dust and make it stick better. Make sure you start dusting at the top and work downwards.

A piece of soft cloth dampened with a furniture polish or multipurpose spray, whichever is more appropriate for the surface, picks up dust quite effectively. Besides giving your furniture a shine, furniture polish can help prevent scratches on wooden furniture.

Microfibre cloths attract dust without the need for chemicals, holding onto the dust and removing it without damaging furniture or other surfaces. Some disposable wipes and cloths are also a good option for quick dusting jobs.

A good vacuum cleaner is an essential item for cleaning. Use a vacuum cleaner with various attachments for cleaning the ceiling to the floor. You can also use a sweeper or mop with disposable sheets that pick up dust for wooden floors.

Regular vacuuming is necessary for carpets and rugs, including the padding underneath, as they absorb and hold dust readily. Besides vacuuming the cushions, it is advisable to occasionally take them outside for a thorough beating as this helps remove deeply embedded dust.

To get at dust trapped in the tiny nooks of knick-knacks, use a soft brush and then wipe with a microfibre cloth. For items that will not be damaged by water, you may also soak them with a little detergent, rinse and leave them to dry.

Electronic equipment such as television sets, stereo players and computers often attract dust. Wipe with a microfibre cloth and use a soft brush to clear the dust from the vents. Before you start cleaning, remember to unplug the equipment.

By using the appropriate dust-busing methods and equipping yourself with the right products and solutions, you can save a lot of time and have a home that is clean and comfortable to be in.
