Environmental Features

More consumers are becoming aware of environmental issues and taking steps to make their homes more environmentally friendly. They are adopting practices such as conserving energy, recycling and buying environmentally friendly products for their homes.

An environmentally friendly home will have features such as well-insulated windows and energy-saving lighting designs. Other aspects include using energy efficient appliances and tapping on solar energy for the heating of water.

Make use of lighting equipment with a variety of dimming and sensor systems to increase energy efficiency. A dimming system adjusts the light output and maintains a comfortable level of light while minimising the use of energy. A sensor that turns the light on when someone enters a room and automatically turns it off when the person leaves also helps to save energy. Use florescent lights in place of incandescent light bulbs where possible as the latter use more electricity.

Heat enters the house and cool air from air-conditioning escapes from it through the glass and framing material of windows. Such problems can be minimised with properly designed and well installed windows which help make the environment in the home more comfortable.

Indoor air quality affects the health and well being of the occupants in a house. Ensuring good ventilation is important and there are products such as air cleaners and purifiers that can help keep the particulate levels in a room low.

Consider installing water heaters using new heating technology that help save energy. Although the equipment and installation cost of solar water heating systems may be higher, they reduce energy use and are likely to be cheaper in the long run.

Tests on home appliances have shown that they use electricity and water with varying degrees of efficiency. For example, some refrigerators can use up to twice the amount of energy as others of the same capacity so it is important to check on the energy efficiency level when shopping for such appliances. Energy saving features in appliances like washing machines and dishwashers not only reduce electricity consumption but also save water.

The effort to include environmentally friendly features in homes and the use of environmentally friendly products should be encouraged. These measures will reduce the environmental impact of housing over time and help in the protection of the environment.
