Go Green @ Home

Plants bring beauty into the home by brightening it up with colour. They provide a cheerful sight and add to the ambience of a room. Decorating a home with plants can also help to keep the air clean and bring health benefits to the family members.

There are many harmful pollutants in the environment that affect indoor air quality. People are often subject to chemical emissions from various items commonly found in the home such as furniture, carpets, paints and cleaning products which all add to indoor air contamination. Research has shown that common indoor plants can help to clear the air of airborne toxic chemicals and improve the air quality.

If you are living in a busy area, place some large plants near the window as they are effective in helping to insulate a room from the noisy surroundings. Too much noise can affect one’s health and raise stress levels. Although plants cannot completely block out noise at high levels, the thick leaves will absorb some of the noise and improve the living environment.

In indoor spaces that are air conditioned, moisture is removed from the air. When the air gets too dry, people become more prone to coughs, sore throats, colds and flu. By adding humidity to the environment, plants help to prevent the air from becoming too dry.

Plants have a soothing effect and they can make you feel calmer and more relaxed. The oxygen generated by plants is also good for your health. Having plants in the home brings a little of nature indoors and they can provide just the right finishing touch to the decoration of a room.

Grow the house plants in attractive planters or pots and place them strategically in various parts of the home such as the living and dining areas. They can easily complement your décor and can even be placed in the kitchen or bathroom as long as the space is of a suitable temperature and has sufficient light.

Taking care of plants is a wonderful way to improve a person’s physical and emotional well being. Spending a little time each day among the plants helps to relieve stress. Plants help to make the home environment more pleasant and healthy, giving its occupants a sense of well being.
