Cross Laminated Timber/ Glued Laminated TimberWhat is Cross Laminated Timber (CLT)/ Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam)?
Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is an engineered structural material comprising layers of wood stacked cross-wise and bonded with structural adhesives. CLT is used for walls, floors and roofs.
Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) is produced in a similar fashion but with the grain aligned in one direction. Glulam is predominantly used for structural beams. Both are prefabricated in factories to precise specifications, then joined on-site with simple connections using hand tools to form complete structures.
What are the Benefits of Using CLT/Glulam?
To raise construction productivity and fundamentally change the design and construction processes, BCA encourage the industry to embrace the concept of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), where construction is designed such that as much work may be done off-site in a controlled manufacturing environment as possible. CLT/Glulam are game changing technologies that support the DfMA concept to significantly speed up construction.
They can potentially achieve a productivity improvement of up to 25% in terms of manpower and time savings, depending on the complexity of the projects. CLT and Glulam needs minimal on-site manpower as timber members are prefabricated offsite and joined on-site with simple connections using hand tools. Furthermore, dust and noise pollution can be minimised as more activities are done off-site.
Requirements for CLT / Glulam
CLT and glulam have been granted In-Principle Acceptance (IPA) by the Building and Innovation Panel (BIP). Companies which are interested to supply or adopt CLT and glulam in local construction projects would not need to apply to the BIP for evaluation. Instead, they should comply with the IPAs issued to the firm CLT Builders shown below.
For fire safety requirements, you may find out more information through the following circular issued by SCDF on 10 Aug 2016.
