BIM Competitions

International BIM Competition

The International BIM Competition is organised in conjunction with the Singapore Construction Productivity Week (SCPW) in 2017.

The competition this year aims to develop a concept design for partial redevelopment of the BCA Academy to support its expanding educational activities. The two redeveloped blocks will be able to host a minimum of 3,000 students with a maximum of 23,500sqm Gross Floor Area (GFA) including usable space, public circulation, and service area.

The key aspect for the competition is to generate design options through computational approach to best meet the design challenges mentioned below:

1. Sustainability
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Environmental Impact
  • Social Impact
2. Constructability
  • Modularity
  • Prefabrication
  • Rapid Assembly
3. Productivity
  • Maximizing Value
  • Minimizing Waste

The main objective of the competition is to raise awareness and build competency of participants in using computational approach, ‘Building Information Modelling’ (BIM) and ‘Virtual Design and Construction’ (VDC) to enable Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) construction.

Target Participants

Open to all full-time local and international students from tertiary institutions in their respective countries.

Team Composition
  • Recommended to have between 3 to 7 members in each team
  • Team members need not come from the same institute
Scoring Criteria

Below is the general scoring criteria for all participating teams:

Scoring Criteria Percentage (%)
Design Quality
  • Overall planning, background research, context analysis, schematic design proposal, presentation and communication
Computational Design, Analysis and Optimisation
  • The ability to develop multiple design options through computational analysis to arrive at an optimum solution that meets sustainability, constructability, productivity, building performance and considerations for DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly).
Creativity, Innovation & Technologies
  • The level of creativity, innovation and "out of the box" approach for construction productivity
  • Adoption of new or existing simulation, optimisation, computational approach and technologies

Building Information Modeling / Virtual Design and Construction to be incorporated throughout and demonstrated in the presentation panel
