Objectives

The objective of IBC 2016 was to increase awareness and build competency in using computational BIM (Building Information Modelling) innovatively for Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA). With the target to design a temporary exhibition pavilion at Padang, Singapore, the IBC consisted of seminars, hands-on training sessions and online portals. The IBC was held in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic.

195 students took part in this year’s IBC. They formed a total of 35 teams. This was an increase of more than 50% in registration as compared to last year. The teams were from Canada, China, India, Iran, Jordan, Korea, New Zealand and Singapore. This year, eight winners emerged. There were one First prize winner, one Second prize winner, two Third prize winners and four Merit winners.

The practising professionals included local and overseas building industry practitioners and major software vendors, including Autodesk, GraphiSoft and Bentley There were a total of 22 speakers involved.

The Assessment Panel included Mr. Michael O’Connell, Head of BIM and Architecture from Gammon Construction Limited, Mr. Yeo Puah Khoon a practising Architect from FuturaaStud, Mr. Daniels Chandra from ONG&ONG Group Pte Ltd, an Architect-cum-Assistant Professor Stylianos Dritsas from SUTD, our invited expert Mr. Thomas Wortmann, a PHD candidate from SUTD and Mr. Cheng Tai Fatt, DyMD for BCA Academy and BERII (Built Environment Research and Innovation Institute).

All winners will be rewarded with cash prizes, one plaque per team and one certificate for each participant. The winners of the top three prizes will be invited to receive their awards in the SCPW opening ceremony from the Guest of Honour, Minister for National Development, Mr. Lawrence Wong at Singapore MAX Atria, EXPO, on 18 October 2016.

Through this competition, the participants will be well equipped with the fundamental knowledge of the avant-garde computational design, BIM and DfMA concept in the construction industry. The competition aimed to harness the power of technologies for increased productivity and explore smarter ways to approach building design and construction.
