Buildings serve the needs of people using them. It is important that they remain structurally sound and do not pose a safety hazard to occupants and members of the public.

To ensure that building structures are properly maintained and safe for continued occupation, structural inspections are required to be conducted.

When should inspection be carried out?

  • Every 5 years for non-residential buildings
  • Every 10 years for residential buildings*

*detached, semi-detached, terraced, or linked houses
which are exclusively used for residence, as well as temporary buildings, are exempted.

How can Building Owners play their part?

news 1

Building owners have to appoint a qualified Professional Engineer (PE) to inspect the building structures and recommend how structural defects (e.g. steel corrosion, cracks, deflection of structural members) should be repaired.

Where necessary, building owners should engage a contractor to repair the defects according to the PE’s recommendations.
